At Hayward Elementary, student safety is a top priority which is why we practice safety drills throughout the school year. While we always hope an emergency situation will never arise, we know that being prepared is our best resource for keeping students and staff safe in all situations.
Not only do safety drills help our students to react as safely as possible during an emergency, they also allows teachers to practice the most efficient ways to work with our students during emergency situations.
Today we practiced what we would do in the event an emergency occurred at school and we needed to move to a safe location off campus. We practiced leaving the building in a calm and organized way. We lined up on the edge of the playground and checked to ensure we had every student accounted for. The next part of our drill today was to walk to the School Bus Inc. garages. It was a long walk for some of our friends, but they did a fantastic job of following directions and staying together! We practiced where each class would wait with their teachers and staff until a parent would pick them up.
After all that, we did another count to make sure we had every student accounted for and headed back to school. Again, our students did a great job of following staff directions and staying together, making our practice drill successful. We were back on campus and in classrooms in just 40 minutes! If you have any questions about our safety drills, we encourage you to reach out to us.
