September has been a busy month at Hayward! Check out what our amazing second graders have been up to!
Our 201 classroom showed everyone how to be great Hayward HAWKS by showing kindness when they heard about a little girl in Texas who is very ill. They created and mailed cards to her to cheer her up and to let her know they are thinking about her.
202, the English classroom in our second grade two-way immersion program (TWI) has been sorting words by patterns they find and playing math games together. They have also been tackling those big life skills of keeping materials organized and staying on task, and they are rocking it!
In 203, our TWI intern, Senor Melara brought in traditional outfits from his home country of El Salvador and shared about his country to kick off our celebration of International Hispanic Heritage Month on September 15th. Working on reading skills is important in every grade, and students have started reading books in Spanish independently! This is a huge accomplishment!
Second graders have been busy in their Specials rotations as well . In Music, second graders spent their time reviewing beats and rhythms using quarter notes, eighth notes, and quarter rests. They also have been reviewing the solfege pitches they learned with Mrs. Hershman last year in first grade (so, mi, la).
In PE, they took the PACER Test. The test is used to measure a student's aerobic capacity as part of the FitnessGram assessment. Students run back and forth as many times as they can, each lap signaled by a beep sound. The test gets progressively faster as it continues until the student reaches their max lap score. The PACER Test score is combined in the FitnessGram software with scores for muscular strength, endurance, flexibility and body composition to determine whether a student is in the Healthy Fitness Zone™ or the Needs Improvement Zone™. Kudos to our students for giving it their all! They put every bit of strength and energy into the test to show Mr. Peterson how fit they are!
In Library, second graders listened to stories about book care, friendship, autumn, and more. They also learned American Sign Language for the words: library, book, friend, squirrel, and Mexico!
Mr. Rajski and the second graders created patterns in Art with lines and shapes, repeating them and adding color. Just check out these examples!
